Birdnest @ Bunyonyi Resort – Luxury Lodge at Lake Bunyonyi Uganda

Birdnest @ Bunyonyi Resort

Birdnest @ Bunyonyi Resort was one of the first buildings at Lake Bunyonyi. It all began when Francis Kalemera visited the area about 40 years ago. He loved the lake so much that he started building in 1963. His original plan was to make it his home, but tourists often asked to stay there, which later turned it into a lodge.

Accommodation is offered in self-contained rooms that are well furnished and overlook the lake. The restaurant serves both local and international meals prepared by experienced chefs, while the bar provides a wide range of drinks.

The swimming pool is free for overnight guests, while day visitors pay 10,000 UGX. Towels are provided by the pool attendant, and there is also a pool table near the pool.

One of the main activities is canoeing. Canoe rides are free for overnight guests, with life jackets and paddles provided. Motorboats are also available for hire for 2–3 hour rides to explore the islands of Lake Bunyonyi.

Nature walks can be arranged starting from Birdnest, making it a good base for walks and longer hikes. Guides are available to lead visitors. You can also visit the blacksmith at Bukona village, where you can join in daily activities or buy souvenirs to take home.

Bird lovers should bring binoculars to enjoy bird watching. Lake Bunyonyi is home to about 200 bird species. The name “Bunyonyi” itself means “little birds” in the local language.

Birdnest @ Bunyonyi Resort offers many guest services including babysitting for children from 8 am to 9 pm, room service, an all-day kitchen up to 9 pm, DSTV in the lounge, a 24-hour reception desk, and daily housekeeping.

Meals are prepared from fresh local ingredients, with both Ugandan and international options available. The staff are welcoming and make guests feel at home.

Birdnest @ Bunyonyi Resort is considered one of the best luxury lodges at Lake Bunyonyi. It can be reached in about 7 hours by road from Kampala, Uganda’s capital.

Other activities at Lake Bunyonyi include cultural encounters with the Batwa people, swimming, fishing, and more.
