Engagi Lodge is one of the most luxurious lodges in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi. It is located near the park headquarters, where gorilla trekking begins. The lodge is named after a local Rukiga word meaning “Gorilla.”
Accommodation includes 8 en suite safari cottages hidden in the forest, giving guests privacy. Each cottage has a private veranda, hot water, and a bathroom. The main building has a dining area serving both local and international meals, a bar with a lounge, and a large outdoor veranda with views of the forest canopy. Guests can also walk down to the river near the lodge to enjoy the plants and animals of the area.
The lodge is built with local materials such as eucalyptus wood and stone, giving it a natural feel. The restaurant serves tasty meals, while the bar is stocked with a wide variety of drinks.
Activities near the Lodge
- Gorilla Trekking: While staying at Engagi Lodge, you can trek gorillas in the Buhoma sector. Some of the groups found here include the Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Mubare families. Trekking time depends on your pace and where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you are allowed one hour to observe and take photos.
- Bird Watching: Bwindi is home to more than 351 bird species, some found only in this region. Bird lovers should bring binoculars to spot species such as the Kivu ground thrush, montane oriole, regal sunbird, African emerald, short-tailed warbler, white-tailed flycatcher, and many more.
Apart from gorilla trekking, visitors can also enjoy gorilla habituation, bird watching, guided nature walks, and cultural encounters with local communities.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to half of the world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas. The park is divided into four sectors: Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga, and Ruhija. More than 15 mountain gorilla families have been habituated here.
Mountain gorillas share over 90 percent of their DNA with humans. They are endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. In the 19th century, gorillas were almost extinct, but their numbers have slowly increased thanks to conservation efforts.
