Kitojo Guest Cottages are located about 30 minutes from Kibale Forest National Park. They are among the best budget accommodation options near the park. The cottages were formerly known as Kitojo Tourist Home, but the name and management were later changed.
The cottages are named after Kitojo Hill in Kibale, which offers wide views of local farmlands, the countryside, and the Rwenzori Mountains. Rooms are set with comfortable beds, free Wi-Fi, hot running water, and porches overlooking the landscape.
The restaurant serves both local and international meals, and breakfast includes freshly baked bread from the lodge. Laundry services are available, and the staff are friendly and attentive, making stays comfortable.
Kitojo Guest Cottages also organize village walks where visitors can meet local families, join in daily activities, and buy handmade crafts to take home.
Activities near the lodge
- Chimpanzee Trekking: Kibale Forest National Park is the best place to trek chimpanzees in Uganda, with about 1,500 of the country’s 4,950 chimpanzees found there. Treks usually last 2–5 hours, depending on the location of the chimps and the pace of the group. Once found, visitors spend one hour observing and taking photos. Other primates and wildlife such as red colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoest monkeys, olive baboons, sitatunga, bush pigs, and mongoose may also be seen.
- Chimpanzee Habituation: Chimpanzee habituation is the process of helping chimpanzees get used to human presence before they are opened to tourism. Visitors can join rangers in this activity and spend more hours with the chimpanzees compared to the standard one-hour trekking experience.
- Birding: Kibale Forest is home to more than 178 bird species, some of which are unique to the area. Common birds include great blue turaco, hairy-breasted barbet, yellow-billed barbet, western nicator, superb sunbird, white-breasted nigrofinch, brown-crowned tchagra, white shrike-flycatcher, and black-crowned waxbill.
How to Get There
Kibale Forest National Park can be reached in 3–4 hours by road from Kampala via Mbarara. The park is 26 kilometers south of Fort Portal, the nearest town.
The best time to visit is December to February and June to August, when trails are dry and trekking is easier. The wet season is also good since food is plenty, and chimpanzees move less.
