Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is found on Nteko Ridge, overlooking Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Kashasha Rift Valley, and Nkuringo Hill, from which it gets its name. The lodge also gives wide views of the rift valley and the Virunga volcanoes in the distance.
The lodge started as Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite before growing into one of the top safari lodges in Uganda. It is about 300 meters from the Nkuringo visitor reception, meaning the gorilla trekking briefing point is only 10–15 minutes away. Rushaga sector briefing point is about a 45-minute drive from the lodge.
Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is one of the best luxury accommodation options in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It has eight garden cottages, three villas, and one family villa. All the cottages are built with local materials to blend with the natural setting. Each of the eight cottages has en-suite facilities, a private balcony with views, and a shared fireplace.
The three villas have two interconnecting bedrooms. Each bedroom has a balcony, en-suite bathroom, private terrace, and a connecting door. These villas are ideal for families or groups of friends. The family villa has two bedrooms with a shared balcony.
The restaurant serves homemade meals and freshly baked bread, while the bar offers a variety of drinks to enjoy after a long day. From the dining area and lounge, guests can enjoy clear views of the Virunga volcanoes.
The lodge also has a spa, a good place to relax after trekking gorillas. Massages take between 60 and 90 minutes, done by experienced staff, and end with herbal tea, fruit, or infused water.
Activities at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge
- Gorilla Trekking: The main activity at Bwindi is trekking mountain gorillas. A permit costs $800 per person. Children under 15 years or adults with infectious diseases such as flu are not allowed to trek.
- Gorilla Habituation: This is the process of preparing gorillas to get used to human presence. It takes about 2–3 years before a gorilla group can be visited. Bwindi is the only park where tourists can join rangers and researchers in this process. Unlike the one-hour trekking visit, gorilla habituation allows tourists to spend four hours with the gorillas.
