Otuho Tribe of South Sudan – Cultural Practices, Agriculture & Ancestral Beliefs

Otuho Tribe of South Sudan - Cultural Practices, Agriculture & Ancestral Beliefs

The Otuho people live near mountain ranges such as the Imatong Mountains, which is the highest mountain in South Sudan. Interacting with them is one of the best experiences you can have during a nature walk in an Otuho village.

They showcase their local dances, traditional dishes, and their love for cattle.

The Otuho highly value their cattle, which are guarded by young unmarried men with guns. Cattle provide milk and blood, which help sustain the community.

In addition to cattle keeping, they practice subsistence farming. They grow crops such as sesame, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, sweet potatoes, tobacco, and many others.

Sometimes, they use these crops as a means of exchange for cattle.

Land in this community is free. This means that no one owns land individually. However, some people have made boundaries to mark the end of one person’s garden and the start of another.

Like the Didinga, the Otuho believe in worshiping their ancestors. Their leader, known as Ajok, is said to have once brought a young boy back to life.

However, the boy’s father became jealous and killed him again. This angered Ajok and because of this, Ajok promised never to resurrect anyone from the Otuho tribe again.

This led to their saying, “Death is permanent.”
