Drone Rules & Regulations in South Sudan

In South Sudan, drone use is allowed but with certain regulations. While a permit is not required for recreational use, commercial drone use requires a permit from the local aviation authority. It’s generally not recommended to assume drones can be flown by tourists, and it’s advisable to contact customs authorities in advance.

With South Sudan not having well documented laws governing the use of drones on the country, it’s important to read the laws of the counties around to have an imagination of what to expect while here. There are some universal rules that are applicable in almost every country and its important that you first meet those.

You also consult with travel agent as they can advise you on how to go about it as they may have good experience with use of drones in South Sudan. Here are some of the rules we have come up with that may apply in South Sudan using the experience we have and what’s usually done around Eastern Africa. You will still have to make sure your tour agent gets clearance for you to use the drone.

General Regulations:

You should always consult your local Civil Aviation Authority. Drone guidelines and regulations differ from country to country.

Most states require you to get a permit before operating a drone:

If the drone weighs more than 25 kg (55 lbs).

If you are paid to use the drone or if you use it for research.

Keep your drone within eyesight at all times.

Read the user’s manual before operating your drone.

Check your drone before each flight.

Don’t fly within 50 meters (55 yards) of or over people, property, or vehicles.

Don’t fly over 150 meters (490 feet) from the ground.

Don’t fly near an airport. Stay at least 8km (5 miles) away.

Always remember that you are now a remote pilot. You are responsible for flying safely and avoiding collisions.
