Mount Bisoke is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains, located on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It rises to 3,711 meters above sea level and can only be hiked from the Rwanda side. The mountain is found inside Volcanoes National Park, the most popular park in Rwanda, known for its endangered mountain gorillas.
Mount Bisoke is a famous hiking destination that gives visitors a memorable experience on safari in Rwanda. At the summit lies a large crater lake, 400 meters wide and 100 meters deep. The name “Bisoke” comes from a local word meaning “soaked in water,” referring to the crater lakes scattered across the mountain slopes.
The slopes of Mount Bisoke are covered with vegetation such as bamboo forests and montane forests. Wildlife is common here, with primates like golden monkeys, mountain gorillas, colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, and baboons. Bigger animals such as elephants, duikers, buffaloes, and bushbucks may also be seen.
The mountain last erupted in 1952 due to tectonic movements. It is also closely linked to the work of Dian Fossey, the primatologist who established the Karisoke Research Institute between Bisoke and Karisimbi for gorilla conservation. Visitors can also hike to her tomb as part of their trip.
Hiking Mount Bisoke
There are two main hiking routes. The first leads to the summit crater lake, taking about 4 hours to ascend and 2 hours to descend. The second route takes climbers to a smaller lake inside the mountain, which takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on pace. Treks usually begin at 7:00 am from Kinigi Park headquarters. Porters are available to help carry extra luggage at a small fee.
