Bushara Island Camp is located on a private island in Lake Bunyonyi. The camp provides accommodation in self-contained rooms with comfortable beds, some with private patios or balconies that look out over the lake.
A boat is always available on the mainland to take guests to the island, where staff welcome you with a drink on arrival. Accommodation includes 8 safari tents built with local materials, the Kingfisher family cottage for groups of 4–6 people, and 2 Pitta cottages with one queen bed and one single bed. There is also a camping ground with shared toilets for budget travelers.
The on-site Swallows Restaurant serves both local and international meals, while the well-stocked bar offers a range of soft and alcoholic drinks. Guests can also take part in activities such as canoeing, fishing, and nature walks.
Bushara Island Camp operates as a sustainable eco-tourism project. Funds from the camp support community programs such as HIV/AIDS education, income-generating projects, orphan care, and scholarships.
Facilities at the camp include free parking, meeting and banquet space, a 24-hour front desk, gardens, babysitting services, a children’s playground, indoor games, and a library.
Bushara Island Camp is located about 8 kilometers from Kabale town and can be reached in about 15 minutes by boat. It is one of the affordable options for visitors to Lake Bunyonyi.
Akampene Island
Akampene Island, also known as Punishment Island, is a small island where, in the past, unmarried pregnant girls were abandoned to die. This practice ended in the mid-20th century. Men who could not afford bride price would sometimes rescue the girls by taking them from the island.
Bwama and Njuyeera Island (Sharp’s Island)
Bwama and Njuyeera Island, also called Sharp’s Island, is named after Leonard Sharp, an English missionary who came to Uganda in 1921. He built a leprosy treatment center on the island and lived there, building a small house that is now known as the White House Hotel.
