Jacana Safari Lodge – Luxury Crater Lake Lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Jacana Safari Lodge

Jacana Safari Lodge is located on the edge of the largest crater lake in Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda. It is one of the luxury lodges in the country, designed to meet the needs of travelers.

The lodge was built using local materials combined with modern design. Wood, ropes, and poles were used in construction, blending with the natural setting of tropical hardwood forest and the lake. This gives the lodge a mix of traditional style and modern comfort.

Jacana Safari Lodge has 10 luxury chalets set in Maramagambo Forest. Each chalet has large windows overlooking the lake and a service bell for guest assistance. The lodge is part of GeoLodges Uganda, which also manages Nile Safari Lodge in Murchison Falls and Rainforest Lodge in Mabira Forest.

The family cottage has two connected rooms, both with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, and private verandas facing Lake Nyamusingire.

Meals include both local and international dishes, served in the main dining area or at the Captain’s Table, a floating pontoon on the lake. The sundowner bar also overlooks the lake, making it a good place to enjoy an evening drink. Kayaking on the lake can be arranged for guests.

The main lounge has a fireplace, hammocks, Persian rugs, and comfortable sofas. Guests can also relax at the swimming pool, sauna, or enjoy a massage while looking out over the lake.

Activities in the Park

  • Forest Walks: Guided walks are available in Maramagambo Forest. The word “Maramagambo” means “end of words.” According to local history, a group of young people once got lost in the forest for a long time. When they finally returned, they were too tired to speak, hence the name. Walks last from one hour to half a day. Primates seen in the forest include black-and-white colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and olive baboons.
  • Kayaking on the Lake: Lake Nyamusingire is Uganda’s largest crater lake. Kayaking here gives visitors a chance to explore the lake, see wildlife along the shores, and spot many water birds, especially in the afternoon.
  • Game Drives: Game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park give visitors the chance to see animals such as Ugandan kob, elephants, warthogs, antelopes, and bushbucks. The Ishasha sector of the park is also famous for tree-climbing lions. The best time for game drives is early morning or late afternoon.
