Kabalega Wilderness Lodge is located in Mubaku village along the River Nile inside Murchison Falls National Park. This is Uganda’s largest national park, established in 1952, and covering an area of 3,840 square kilometers. The River Nile divides the park, which is made up of savannah grasslands, woodlands, and riverine forests.
Being inside the conservation area, visitors often see monkeys, hippos, and birds around the lodge.
The lodge offers accommodation in deluxe cabins set in the bush with views of the park and the Nile. Each cabin is private and has a river-view bath and a deck for relaxing after a day of activities while watching the sunset.
The lounge and dining area are built on a raised point along the riverbank, giving wide views of Murchison Falls National Park. Guests are served both local and international meals. There is also a sundowner deck with a well-stocked bar for enjoying cold drinks while watching the sunset.
Activities in the Park
- Wildlife Viewing: Murchison Falls National Park is home to many animals. Game drives and hot air balloon safaris are available. Visitors can see lions, elephants, giraffes, hartebeests, bushbucks, waterbucks, oribis, leopards, and Ugandan kobs. Chimpanzees can also be seen in Budongo Forest.
- Boat Cruise: A cruise on the River Nile takes visitors to the base of Murchison Falls, where the Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge before dropping into a powerful waterfall and flowing to Lake Albert. Along the riverbanks, you may see animals drinking, as well as crocodiles and hippos.
- Bird Watching: The park has about 450 bird species. Some of the birds include the shoebill stork, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Senegal thick-knee, grey crowned crane, black-headed lapwing, African jacana, palm-nut vulture, red-throated bee-eater, African quail finch, giant kingfisher, and goliath heron.
Best Time to Visit
Murchison Falls National Park can be visited all year. The best time for wildlife viewing is from June to September and December to February, when vegetation is thinner and animals are easier to see. Birding is best from November to April, when migratory species from Europe and North Africa are present.
