Katara Safari Lodge is located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. It overlooks the Rwenzori Mountains, the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Lake Edward. The lodge is only 16 kilometers from the Katunguru gate of the park.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the most important wildlife reserves in Uganda. It has a variety of habitats including savannah grasslands, crater lakes, papyrus swamps, and forests. The park is home to many mammals, birds, and other wildlife. It was named after Queen Elizabeth of England.
Accommodation at Katara Safari Lodge is offered in 8 grass-thatched cottages with wooden floors and canvas walls that can be opened for wide views. Each cottage has a double bed and a four-poster star bed that can be moved to the veranda for sleeping under the sky.
The family cottage has two bedrooms, a shared bathroom, and a living room. One bedroom has a double bed, while the other has two twin beds. The cottage also has hammocks and a private sitting area with a couch.
The lodge was built using local materials from renewable resources. Hot water is heated by solar power, rainwater is harvested, and eco-friendly systems such as ultra-low flush toilets are used.
Activities in the Park
- Game Drives: Wildlife viewing is the main activity in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Game drives or balloon safaris are available. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times to see animals such as hyenas and hippos.
- Bird Watching: The park has more than 600 bird species, some unique to this region. Guests at Katara Safari Lodge can see many species in the grounds, including large brown eagles, long-tailed mousebirds, barbets, fire finches, and flycatchers.
- Chimpanzee Trekking: Kyambura Gorge, also called the “Valley of Apes,” is part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. It is home to chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, colobus monkeys, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and many bird species such as the blue-headed bee-eater, African finfoot, bar-tailed godwit, martial eagle, African skimmer, and flamingos. Trekking is done in the morning or afternoon.
How to Get There
The park can be reached by road in 5 to 6 hours from Kampala or Entebbe. Flights are also available to Mweya Airstrip from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield.
Best Time to Visit
The park can be visited year-round. The best months are June to August and December to February, when vegetation is thinner and animals gather at water sources, making them easier to see.
