Travelers Rest Hotel is located in Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda.
It is one of the oldest hotels in the country, built in 1950, and is an ideal place for budget travelers planning to trek gorillas in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The famous American primatologist Dian Fossey also stayed here during her study of mountain gorillas.
The hotel was first built by Walter Baumgartel, a well-known gorilla enthusiast. It was later taken over by the Ugandan government during Amin’s regime but has since been restored.
Travelers Rest Hotel offers clear views of the Virunga Volcanoes, home to endangered mountain gorillas. Apart from accommodation, guests can also take part in activities such as biking tours, community walks, mountain hikes, and nature walks.
The hotel is managed by Nature Lodges Uganda and has 10 rooms in total: 8 standard rooms and 2 suites. All rooms have warm running water and comfortable beds. Every evening, a campfire is lit where guests can relax and share stories of the day.
How to Get There
Kisoro town is about 550 kilometers from Kampala, Uganda’s capital. It can be reached in an 8–9 hour drive or by air from Kajjansi Airfield or Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip, followed by a short drive to the hotel.
Best Time to Visit
Travelers Rest Hotel can be visited any time of the year. However, if you are staying here for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the best months are June to September and December to February, when the trails are dry and easier to trek.
