Wagtail Eco Safari Camp is located between the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The Nkuringo gorilla family, one of the most fascinating groups in Bwindi, can be trekked from this part of the park. The family was first seen on the Nkuringo hills and later habituated. It is made up of 19 members and was originally led by the silverback Nkuringo, who died in 2008.
His son Rafiki then took over leadership, and during his time, the group welcomed twins born to the female Kwitonda. Trekking this family is one of the most challenging hikes in Bwindi, but the reward is meeting the gorillas along with beautiful views of Mount Nyamuragira and Mount Nyiragongo volcanoes.
Wagtail Eco Safari Camp is found in Rubugiri village, between the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors. The camp is built with eco-friendly local materials, giving guests a real wilderness experience. It offers wide views of the Virunga volcanoes and Bwindi forest.

- Gorilla Trekking: Guests can trek gorillas in Bwindi from either Rushaga or Nkuringo. Trekking can last from 2 hours to a full day, depending on the gorilla family’s location.
- Bird Watching: Bwindi is home to over 300 bird species, some of which are unique to this region. Birds commonly seen include the short-tailed warbler, Kivu ground thrush, yellow-eyed black catcher, black bee-eater, African blue flycatcher, African emerald cuckoo, and garners warbler.
- Cultural Encounters: Bwindi was once home to the Batwa people, also called pygmies, who lived in the forest with gorillas before the area became a national park. The Batwa depended on the forest for food, medicine, and shelter. Today, they live on the edges of the forest and work on nearby farms. Visitors can meet them, enjoy traditional dances, and join guided walks in the forest where Batwa guides explain their past lifestyle, hunting methods, and use of plants for medicine.
Getting There
The Nkuringo sector of Bwindi is 45 kilometers from Kabale town along the Kabale–Kisoro highway. It can also be reached from Buhoma through the Butogota route.
