South Sudan has two international airports: one in Malakal, in the country’s north, and one in Juba, the capital. Juba International Airport is the bigger and busiest of these two.
Juba International Airport
Juba International Airport is situated on the western bank of the White Nile, 5 kilometers northeast of the city’s central business district.
Both domestic and international flights, including those carrying passengers and cargo, are handled by Juba International Airport. This airport serves both scheduled and charter aircraft and is a key hub for the South Sudanese military.
Juba International Airport frequently serves as the entry and departure point for humanitarian operations conducted by governmental and non-governmental organizations for South Sudan.
Malakal International Airport
Malakal International Airport is Located in the northeastern city of Malakal, close to the borders with Ethiopia and the Republic of Sudan. It is South Sudan’s other international airport. Juba is the most populated city in South Sudan, with Malakal coming in second.
Malakal International Airport is located next to the Upper Nile University main campus, just north of the city’s central business sector.
This airport, which is still regularly utilized by UN personnel and cargo, served as a key staging area for UN operations to South Sudan in the past.
The country’s second-biggest city, Malakal, is located in northeastern South Sudan, close to the Republic of Sudan and Ethiopian borders.
Boat transportation is available from Malakal, which is situated on the banks of the White Nile, just north of the point where the Nile meets the Sobat River. Boats from Malakal go all the way south to Adok in South Sudan’s Jonglei State. If you choose to head north, you can enter the Republic of Sudan and travel all the way up to Khartoum along the White Nile.
By road, Malakal and Juba are around 650 kilometers apart.
