The Oruzogo gorilla family lives in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Tourists trekking this family usually stay in either Ruhija or Buhoma. The group was opened for trekking in 2012 and was once led by a silverback called Tibirikwata.
The name Oruzogo comes from “Oruzogoto,” a plant common in their home area. The family was first set aside for research but was later opened for trekking due to the high demand for gorilla permits in Uganda.
The Oruzogo family has about 17 members, including 1 juvenile, 5 infants, 5 adult females, 2 sub-adults, 2 blackbacks, and 2 silverbacks. It is considered one of the most interesting groups to visit because of their playful nature. However, the number of members can change over time due to births, deaths, or movements between families.
