Why Visit Gorillas in Africa – Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters

Why Visit Gorillas in Africa

Gorillas are among the most remarkable primates to see in their natural habitat. Africa is home to four gorilla subspecies: eastern gorillas (mountain gorillas and eastern lowland gorillas) and western gorillas (western lowland gorillas and cross river gorillas).

If you are planning a trip to Africa, the best countries to visit for gorilla encounters are Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

These three countries are the only places in the world where endangered mountain gorillas live. Meeting them in the wild is an experience many travelers call once in a lifetime.

They share over 98% of their DNA with humans and are only found in the wild, never in zoos or captivity.

Why visit gorillas in Africa?

  • Fewer than 1,063 mountain gorillas survive. These apes live only in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. They can be seen in just four parks: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Volcanoes National Park, Virunga National Park, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
  • They are endangered. Mountain gorillas face threats from poaching, diseases, habitat loss, and natural disasters. Their reproduction rate is very low, with females usually giving birth to one infant and rarely twins. In 1981, there were only 254 left, but thanks to conservation efforts, the population has grown to 1,063.
  • Your visit supports conservation. Gorilla trekking permits directly support conservation work. Funds from permits pay park staff, gorilla doctors, and research programs that protect the gorillas. By visiting, you help secure their future.

About gorilla trekking

Trekking to see gorillas means hiking through thick tropical forests at high altitude. The trek can take several hours depending on your fitness level and the location of the gorilla family. Groups of eight visitors are assigned to one gorilla family, and once found, you are allowed one hour with them.

To prepare, pack waterproof hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts, layered socks, insect repellent, a hat, a daypack, a good camera, and a small first aid kit.
