Gorilla Valley Lodge is part of Nature Lodges in Uganda, found across the country’s national parks.
While staying here, visitors can trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. It is also possible to book the lodge for gorilla trekking tours starting from Kigali.
Mgahinga National Park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family and other unhabituated gorillas. It is also known for golden monkeys, which are playful and usually seen in groups of 60 to 100. The park also contains three of the Virunga volcanoes.
Bwindi is home to about half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. It has over 15 habituated gorilla families and is the only park in the world where gorilla habituation is possible. In addition to gorillas, Bwindi has 13 other primate species, including chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys.
Gorilla Valley Lodge is one of the best mid-budget options in Bwindi and is often used by travelers on budget gorilla tours.
About Gorilla Valley Lodge
The lodge is located at the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the Rushaga sector. Each cottage offers wide views of the forest.
Bwindi is divided into four sectors: Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma, and Nkuringo. It is recommended to book accommodation in the same sector where you have secured your gorilla permit.
The lodge has 12 en-suite cottages built with local materials to give a natural experience. Each has comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and showers with both warm and cold water.
The restaurant serves both local and international meals, and the staff are welcoming, creating a homely atmosphere. Room rates range from $105 to $130 depending on occupancy and meal plan.
Gorilla Permits
Gorilla trekking permits cost $800 per person per trek. Gorilla habituation permits cost $1,500 per person per trek. Permits can be booked through a trusted tour company or the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Because demand is high, it is advised to book 3–6 months in advance, especially in peak seasons.
Best Time to Visit
Bwindi can be visited year-round, but the best months are June to September and December to February. These are the dry seasons, when roads are easier to use, vegetation is less thick, and it is easier to spot gorillas and take good photos.
